Three new projects with the music and the stage direction of the composer Arturo Fuentes will be presented in the fall 2019.
CARLOTA is a monodrama dedicated to the soprano Sarah Maria Sun in the role of Carlota of Belgium “Empress of the nothing”, the unhappy Belgian princess who was gradually overcome by madness. After the death of her husband, Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, she continued to write letters to him for 60 years in which she imagines him coming home again. The mise-en-scene with video, electronics and chamber orchestra is full of tension and darkness, reflecting the delicate mental state of Carlota. Based on the book News from the empirewritten by Fernando del Paso, Arturo Fuentes recreates the inner world of Carlota, nostalgic and fantastic.
For the Drumming percussion group of Portugal, Fuentes composed CEGUEIRA, based on the homonymous novel (Blindness, 1995) written by José Saramago (Nobel Prize 1998). Another psychological subject this time approached as a staged concert where the drummers play sometimes in a complete darkness. In contrast to the darkness of Carlota, here we find a white blindness, as Saramago described it in his novel. Light and percussions with recorded voices and video are part of this project.
INFINITO double concert for cello and piano will be premiered by the Haydn Orchestra under the direction of John Axelrod. Dedicated to the incredible duo formed by Francesco Dillon and Emanuele Torquati, this new composition for soloists and orchestra will close 2019.
