QUIMERA
dedicated to Elisabeth Plank (2022)

In Greek mythology, the Chimera is a monstrous creature composed of parts of different animals. It is usually described as having the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the tail of a snake or a dragon. This combination of disparate elements symbolises chaos and the union of contradictory forces. Arturo Fuentes' new work for solo harp, dedicated to the outstanding harpist Elisabeth Plank, evokes the mythological creature composed of different parts, a perfect allegory for musical composition that plays with the idea of repetition, constant rhythm and sound texture as fundamental elements. Fuentes explores the mechanical-combinatory complexity of the performer's hands and the reverberating sonority of the harp, creating a sound tapestry where each repetition and each rhythm establishes a delicate balance between the ephemeral, the real and the imaginary.

COSMIC SPACE
new guitar quartet (2023)

This work dedicated to the ALEPH Gitarrenquartett to celebrate its 30th anniversary, was premiered in October 2023 at the ZeitGenuss festival, Germany. 
​The piece is inspired by a phrase from the short story "The Aleph" by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges: "The diameter of the Aleph would be two or three centimetres, but the cosmic space was there, without diminishing in size."

HEAVY at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest

​Lars Mlekusch and his saxophone ensemble Zürich saxophone collektive / ZHdK Studierende presented HEAVY, composed in 2015, at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest (14 April 2024). 

Between stridencies and jazz orchestrations in the style of the nouvelle vague films of the 60's, HEAVY emerges: a work that projects an apparently improvised sound energy, where the saxophone orchestra takes center stage​.

RIPITI
New work for ensemble (2024)

This work will soon be premiered in Basel, Zurich and Caracas (Venezuela). It is dedicated to the recently formed Ensamble Iberoamericano. About the work we can read: In his work for ensemble, composer Arturo Fuentes revisits the element of repetition, presenting it under a more contemplative angle compared to his previous works.

RITMO NO MEU SONO
New piece for vibraphone (2024)

Now in the catalog of Fuentes' works for percussion, comes “Ritmo no meu sono” (The Rhythm of my Dream), a piece commissioned by percussionist Miquel Bernat. Inspired by a poem by Pessoa. It is a study for vibraphone, the first of a series of explorations for percussion that focus on repetition. 
In Fuentes' own words: "In this process of musical creation, I embark without a fully defined idea of what I want to express, letting the act of composing guide me towards the desired meaning. Dispersion is a constant guide in this process, and only by giving myself completely to the action of creating do I come to understand the essence of the work."

PICADO for ensemble at the Wiener Konzert Haus

I am thrilled to announce my return to one of my favorite venues in Vienna, the Wiener Konzert Haus. This time, an exceptional program will be presented in the company of talented friends and composers. We will feature performances by one of Austria's most iconic ensembles, ENSEMBLE XXI. JAHRHUNDERT under the direction of the renowned Peter Burwik.

​It is also interesting to note that my work PICADO is from 2008, and we return to the discussion in the contemporary music milieu about the fact that works are often performed only once. It is always a pleasure that musicians, directors and festival programmers look at composers' past works, which still have life and can give much in the future. 

COSMIC SPACE - Premiere in Germany
FUENTES' collaboration with the ALEPH Gitarrenquartett goes back more than 10 years. Soon we will celebrate its 30th anniversary, for which he will compose a piece to be premiered at the ZeitGenuss Festival on the occasion of this celebration.
