CONCERT NOTE
Deutsch
English
In this work, the cello undergoes a personality change and conceptually becomes a percussion instrument. Statistically speaking, musical works have harmonic, melodic and rhythmic content, whereby the composer assigns different weightings to these parameters. This is how a work acquires its character or style. These parameters are intertwined, e.g. harmony can arise from pointillist rhythms and melody from harmonic superimpositions. In MOOD, these aspects of creation are explored, especially the rhythmic qualities. The rhythm used creates colours, textures and constant changes that can be seen as emotional changes and MOOD changes.

INTERPRETATION NOTE:
It’s important to clearly hear the notes played on the fingerboard, I recommend you to check some videos of guitarists playing TAPPING: both hands playing on the fingerboard (striking the strings) produce real tones. MOOD explores this technique, but, because of the nature of the cello, sometimes the real notes are mixed with noise-percussion sounds. The microphone near the fingerboard captures directly the notes, the microphone near the bridge captures the harmonic color and the bass frequencies, and the contact microphone captures some percussive attacks. In my experience recording the piece, I suggest to use the contact microphone just as an additive color, helping the other microphones to make a round balanced sound. |
